It is very hard to find a club which isn't a hip hop club and a lot of the best ones are in the South Austin area. The music scene in Austin was created by hip hop and is still in high gear.
This is a great place to find a good mix of funkstep, jazz, soul and electronic music and for a good mix of hip hop, funk, hip hop, soul, disco and house. If you don't have the opportunity to check this out, but just would like to hear some interesting music, check it out here .
There is not too much info on the music scene in Abilene that I know of, so I went to Google to see if this area has a scene similar to what I'm looking at. I found this great guide written by the local hip hop and funk band, Kode 6.

The one reason the area is such a great fit for funkstep is that this scene has become a bit of a cult following over the years and they have been very vocal about their devotion to the music.
We have visited La Nueva Luna Bar Music Venue at 1082 S 2nd St in July this year. We arrived in the club at 9 pm and parked our Toyota Highlander close to main entrance.
In the club ia was not allowed a child to carry inside. They allowed me to carry at the doorway but the place was dark and there was no entry for anyone over 5 feet tall.
They had only two tables on the main floor and a balcony seating area with no tables. There was a small bar located right outside the entryway.
The DJ was very good. He played mostly 70's, 80's and 90's hip-hop, R & B, house, techno, and 80s, 90s dance classics. The room was well packed by the time we arrived (9:00 PM). We were greeted by some great friendly employees.
The staff were awesome, the bar had a good selection of food and we found the prices to be fair. We ordered some bar food, which was good, and shared some delicious, homemade quesadillas. The music selection of the evening was upbeat, energetic and varied We found the selection quite diverse.
The vibe in the room was great. There certainly wasn't as much activity like in the days of Saturday Night Fever, but a good dose of 70s inspired funk, new wave and electronic dance-able beats, not techno, definitely made the night feel different, special that there was no DJ on stage.
Guitar legends Carlos Santana, with his band featuring John Patitucci (Grateful Dead bassist), Robben Ford and James Poyser (U2, The Cure) along with The Doobie Brothers, playing with only two guitars as well as John Mayer was on stage and it was the first time I ever saw him.
For us a bit of a disappointment, we heard so much about it. That the first set from John Mayer was amazing, playing "Smile" and "Sweet Bitter," however, our expectations for the second set was definitely greater.
Miles Davis’ quintet with the same line-up as “Filles de Kilimanjaro” (John McLaughlin, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Michael Henderson), “Live-Evil” was, as far as we know, first album release of the band after its formation and it was a monumental moment for jazz/fusion/rock as we knew it. In our personal opinion, the music on this classic album, especially “Gitane,” is what should define a true jazz fan.

a seasoned music lover, I had the pleasure of gracing La Nueva Luna Bar Music Venue in Abilene some time ago with my beloved. However, our excitement was dampened by the prolonged queues at entry, which left us waiting for ages. Nonetheless, once inside, the atmosphere was electric!
