So there are still a few clubs left which are not really ethno and which could possibly be considered ethno jazz clubs but as soon as we started to talk to them all they started telling us that they are not ethno. We decided to start investigating these clubs and we did it because it gave us a lot of data on what are their members' interests.
And then it started to give some data on their demographics. And so, in September 2012 we started interviewing club members on this website and we started gathering the numbers.
So, for example a young guy from Metz who is a member of an ethno jazz club but who was not a big fan of ethnically oriented music, he said to us, "I don't know if ethnically oriented music is worth it and I'm not interested in ethnically oriented music."
Or another example a young man from Metz who is a member of an ethno jazz club but who is looking at ethno-rock from a different perspective. And those are kind of typical situations where we started to find out what kinds of people are attending these clubs.
In the first instance we were actually able to find that the average age of the clubs was 18 and we actually did a study with the club members and found that they were generally between 18 and 25, that they have at least a 3-month history of ethnically oriented music and the average age is 25 years old, that's actually the average age of members.
So this really shows how big a part of the audience are these clubs. In some cases it turns out that these clubs actually make a real difference for the music they offer. The next thing to do is to analyze who is actually playing these clubs.
I really like the idea of putting out a top 50 list of clubs to check out. A quick glance at the list above tells me that this list is pretty good. I would like to see some more solid criteria put into place to help a club get on the list.
